There’s no question that toys are one of the best parts of childhood, but sometimes the sheer number of them can get out of hand. If you’re looking for some practical advice to organise your children’s playroom or bedroom, we’ve got you covered. Here’s our ultimate list of top tips for decluttering children’s toys!
Top Toy Decluttering Tips:
- Make a game plan
- Sort things by category
- Grab some sorting containers
- Go through the items one by one
- Take action immediately
- Put things away in an organised fashion
1. Make a game plan
First things first: decluttering is a big task, so it’s important that you decide how you want to approach it before you actually get started. Some people like to break this chore up over multiple days, a week or even a month. If you’re feeling ambitious, you might decide to do it all in one day. Whatever you and your children decide, write it down in your diary and stick to it!
2. Sort things by category
Ready to get started? The first step you’ll want to take is choosing a category to focus on. For instance, you might start with toddler toys, board games or stuffed toys. Narrowing it down to one category at a time will help you feel more in control and less overwhelmed.
Collect all items in the category of your choice and put them together in one place: a corner of the floor, on top of the bed, etc. Once you’ve finished one category, you can move on to the next — or you might decide to tackle just one category per day. It’s totally up to you!
3. Grab some sorting containers
After you’ve sorted things by category, you’ll want to grab some containers: bin bags, cardboard boxes, storage baskets, whatever you have handy. Label each container based on what you intend to do with its contents: the bin, the charity shop, the loft, keep.
4. Go through the items one by one
Next, it’s time to put the toys into those containers. Handle and inspect each item and decide what you want to do with it. If your children are involved in this process, it can help to ask them questions about the items to help steer their decisions. Do they love it? When was the last time they played with it? Do they think they’ll play with it again soon? Is it in good condition?
5. Take action immediately
Once everything is in a designated box or bag, move quickly! Don’t let the stuff hang around–this doesn’t help with the clutter, and it also gives everyone time to change their minds. If you’re storing things away in the loft, carry them up to the loft. If you’re bringing a bag to donate to the charity shop, do so on the same day–or at least put it in the boot of your car so that you can drop it next time you’re out and about.
6. Put things away in an organised fashion
Finally, it’s time to deal with the toys you’ve decided to keep. To avoid clutter in the future, it’s a smart idea to put everything away in an organised fashion. For more detailed advice on this, check out our handy guide to organising children’s toys!
