T-rexcellent facts about dinosaurs
Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for an incredible 150 million years and became extinct over 65 million years ago. Palaeontologists say they were cousins of lizards, snakes and crocodiles. Many dinosaurs were enormous and some, like the Lesothosaurus, were the size of a chicken. The longest dinosaur was the Argentinosaurus which measured over 40 metres. That’s the length of four fire engines and with a weight equivalent to 17 African elephants! The speediest dinosaur was the Dromiceiomimus which could run at speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour. The oldest known dinosaur was the Saltopus, a small carnivore that lived 245 million years ago.
Research in the past few years suggests some dinosaurs might have been colourful. Like the Sinosauroteryx which was orange and white with a stripey tail and the Caihong Juji had rainbow-coloured feathers. Many people believe dinosaurs roamed the Earth at the same time although the Stegosaurus was a fossil in T-Rex times.
